Supporting Our Neighborhood Schools
During the last two legislative sessions, Allen has remained steadfast in his support for our public schools and universities. He remains true to his pledge to protect our schools from privatization, to increase public school funding, and to end high stakes tests.
- Allen has supported increased funding for public schools.
- Allen has worked to bring teachers’ salaries up to the national average by voting for an across the board pay raise, while also increasing our retired teachers’ benefits with a “13th check.”
- Allen has been part of a bi-partisan effort to enhance the quality of full-day prekindergarten programs provided by our public schools along with community providers.
- Allen supported legislation to end the high-stakes TAKS test and replace it with end-of-course exams.
- Allen voted to establish the Texas Tomorrow Fund II, making college more affordable for all Texans.
- Allen has consistently opposed private school voucher programs that would divert money from our neighborhood schools.
In 2009, Allen was named the Legislator of the Year by the Association of Texas Professional Educators.
